I teach yoga for every body in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. This is offered in group classes, workshops, retreats and 1:1 sessions.
My teaching style puts the student at the centre of the yoga practice. I offer guidance and knowledgeable support through demonstration, verbal cues, props, optional hands-on assists and adjustments. I encourage all my students to work at their own pace.
The physical yoga or asana I teach has been described as gentle, while still noticeably increasing balance, strength and flexibility. I guide students to find their best alignment in poses so they can find freedom for breath and movement. This process has been proven to help reduce stress, improve sleep and relieve common physical complaints like muscular back pain.
Breath awareness is central to yoga. Each class has a focus on breath throughout and includes breathing exercises called pranayama. These are intended to calm or lift your energy. The breathing exercises I use most often promote relaxation, mood regulation and stress reduction.
Relaxation is a key element of yoga practice. It has profound effects on physical and mental health, especially in our increasingly busy world. By withdrawing the senses, called pratyahara, for a short time at the end of practice, we can relax deeply into muscles, soft tissue and the mind. This takes place lying down and is guided verbally by me. Relaxation is by far the most transformational part of yoga practice for beginners, according to feedback I have received in the past. Former students have reported better sleep, mental clarity and mood.
I am a certified 200 hour yoga teacher with Yoga Alliance (RYT-200) and have 200+ hours teaching experience. I trained with Charlotte Esmé in Inverness in 2014, studying curriculum written by Zenways Yoga School in London. Since then I followed my interest in yoga anatomy to study with Leslie Kaminoff. Then motherhood prompted me to recently complete the 85 hour Pregnancy & Postnatal Yoga Teacher Training with Sally Parkes in Edinburgh.
My teaching has been shaped by the work of Vanda Scaravelli and her students, whose method allows the wisdom of the body to guide the yoga practice. I have also been influenced by the #YogaForEveryBody movement.
My passion is to make yoga more accessible and enjoyable for all people so that we may find more joy and vitality in our lives.
One to one yoga sessions are optimal for anyone looking to begin or deepen a yoga practice that supports their individual needs.
During the session we work together to discover your best alignment in poses to increase strength and flexibility.
We also explore which breathing exercises help you regulate mood and stress, and rest deeply with guided meditation or relaxation.
These sessions are particularly useful for people with specific health considerations and for those looking to begin their yoga practice without having to attend group classes.
The sessions last one hour. You take away a notes sheet from the session to practice at home. A yoga mat and props are provided during in person sessions.
For the time being, these sessions will be held online via Zoom. These are usually held at my home in Kirkcudbright, but I may be able to travel to you within Dumfries and Galloway by prior arrangement.
